Fashion in Nigeria: Trends that rocked 2012

2012 was undoubtedly a memorable year. From the Fuel subsidy removal in January, to the fire incident in Lagos in December. Anyways, back to the issue at hand. Here are the trends that rocked the Nigerian fashion scene in 2012

THE COLOR BLOCK:
Whether we like it or not, we have to admit to the fact that there are rules guiding color-blocking. The art of color blocking entails combining different bold colors of the same shade + the confidence to rock the outfit. I would like my fellow Nigerian ladies to note that there is a limit to the number of colors that can be worn at once. I also want to point out that it is best to use solid colors. However, you can use prints IF you are bold enough to pull it off. Finally, I would like to say that color blocking is not for everyone.  Not every Tom, Dick and Harry (or rather, not every Amaka, Sikira or Bolanle) can pull it off. Just checkout this CU student;

THE PEPLUM:

The word ‘peplum’ originates from the Pakistani word for “tunic”. The peplum is a short overskirt usually attached to a fitted jacket, blouse, skirt or dress. I have two words for this trend: classy and graceful. However, there are some that are horrendous; for example, if it looks frilly like the valances around a bed, then it is a total No-No!

THE SATCHEL & THE MESSENGER BAG:
They are both retro style utilitarian bags. While the latter is aptly named after the bags traditionally carried through history by messengers, the former is a soft sided bag used traditionally by old English schoolboys for carrying books! My dear Nigerians, *holds ear*, a satchel is different from a messenger bag! U dey hear me so? A satchel has a long, detachable strap, with a small strap on top, while a messenger bag has a non-detachable strap. A satchel is more suitable for professional and formal occasions because of its tailored conservative style while a messenger bag‘s laid back style has a classic, casual flair. They both come in various shapes, sizes, colors, etc. and are both suitable for both sexes.

THE SHAMBALLA BRACELET:
This trend was unarguably BIG!
The Shamballa bracelet was founded by Danish Brothers:Mads and Mikkel Kornerup in 2004. Its design was inspired by Buddhist faith. It comes in various colors(each believed to have different meanings to suit dofferent personalities) and sizes. It is suitable for everyday looks, as well as professional and red carpet looks.

This are some of the trends that rocked 2012..... let's watch out for 2013!!!!
